When was the original globe theatre built?
The first Globe Theatre was built in London in 1599. It was built on the Southbank of the river Thames in Southwark, London in close proximity to the Bear Garden. The land had been owned by the Bishop of Winchester and this estate was called the Liberty of the Clink.

Why was the original globe theatre built?
James Burbage (father of the actor, Richard Burbage) had obtained a lease and permission to build first theatre called 'The Theatre' in Shoreditch, London. A dispute over the lease of 'the Theatre'. The Puritan owner, Giles Allen. disapproved of the Theatre and the Lord Chamberlain's Company acting troupe - which included William Shakespeare. Burbage opened negotiations to re-new the lease of the 'Theatre' but these all failed which is the reason why the Globe Theatre was built.

Who built the original globe theatre where did the building materials come from?
All negotiations for a new tenancy agreement failed with Giles Allen who had decided to pull the 'Theatre' down and use the materials to build a new property. The Lord Chamberlain's company of actors had different ideas! A clause in the original agreement allowed the actors to dismantle the Theatre and make use of the building materials themselves! The players decided to demolish the Theatre and transport the timber to a their new site on Bankside in Southwark during the Christmas of 1598. The Globe Theatre was built with the timbers and other material from the old 'Theatre'.

Who built the original globe theatre - who was the architect?
James Burbage consulted Dr. John Dee on the design and construction of The Theatre. The notorious Dr. Dee, renowned as a magician and alchemist, was also extremely knowledgeable about architecture. James Burbage relied on Dee's extensive architectural library to design the plans for the construction of The Theatre which provided a blueprint for he Globe Theatre which was built some years later.

Who built the original globe theatre?
The Globe Theatre was built by a master carpenter called Peter Smith and his workers. The acting troupe, including William Shakespeare, would have probably helped as it was in their interests to get the new Globe Theatre built as quickly as possible - no new Globe built meant no money for the actors. There were six joint Globe Theatre Owners

How long did it take to build the original globe theatre?
The six joint owners of the Globe took out a thirty-one year lease which began at Christmas 1598. The new Globe Theatre was built in just six months and opened for performances in May 1599.

The Globe Theatre was the most magnificent theatre that London had ever seen. The Globe theatre could hold several thousand people! The Globe Theatre didn’t just show plays. It was also reputed to be a brothel and gambling house. It was situated on the Southbank of the river Thames in Southwark called Bankside - next to the Bear Garden.
